British Columbia is one of the mini-courses in the Canadian Landscape series. This time we will travel to Canada’s spectacular West Coast. The mountains rise above peaceful lakes, the forests meet the rocky shoreline, reflections shimmer across still water, the Pacific Ocean stretches toward the horizon, sunsets fill the sky with brilliant colour, and misty coastal light transforms even the simplest moment into something unforgettable.
Through these landscapes, we will explore the transparency, movement, atmosphere, and expressive possibilities of watercolour while capturing the unique spirit of British Columbia.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of British Columbia through four distinctive watercolour landscapes
inspired by its Pacific coast, forests, mountains and lakes.
In this course, we will explore the brilliant colours of an ocean sunset, the quiet symmetry of reflections on still water, the spacious atmosphere of a mountain lake, and the luminous coastal light surrounding a solitary surfer.
Throughout the four lessons, we will work with light, atmosphere, reflections, depth and the human figure within the landscape. You will practise both controlled and expressive watercolour techniques while learning how to simplify complex natural scenes and transform photographic references into paintings rather than simply copying what the camera sees.
From glowing skies to peaceful mountain water and misty ocean light, British Columbia is a journey through the extraordinary landscapes of Canada’s West Coast.
You will study in a thoughtfully designed art studio space in Pakenham, Ontario, Canada. Every session includes step-by-step demonstrations, plenty of exercises, and space to experiment and grow. After each class, you will receive access to a video tutorial of the main project to continue learning at your own pace.
All support materials will be provided prior to the first day of the course. Please print them or ensure they are available on your device(s) for use during class.
Homework reviews and feedback will be given in person during class sessions to help you stay on track and improve.
The study process will be simple, stress free and understandable for every student. There will be a lots of exercise that will help you to become confident in loose style landscape painting.
The course is suitable for students who are comfortable with basic watercolour techniques and want to deepen their understanding of atmospheric effects and large-sky compositions.
This course is suitable for all levels of watercolour skill. Although some experience would help you to feel more comfortable.

Lesson 1
October 1, 2026
Ocean Sunset
In this lesson, we will capture the dramatic colours of a Pacific sunset as the last light spreads across the sky and reflects on the water. We will explore luminous washes, colour transitions and cloud shapes while learning how to balance the brilliant warmth of the horizon with the dark, textured shoreline.
Lesson 2
October 8, 2026
Lake Reflection
Still water creates one of watercolour’s most beautiful subjects: reflection. In this lesson, we will paint a quiet forest shoreline with massive sunlit rocks mirrored in the lake. We will concentrate on natural greens, rock textures, reflected shapes and subtle distortions that create the illusion of calm, transparent water.
Lesson 3
October 15, 2026
Sunrise
A peaceful mountain lake becomes the setting for a small human story. We will build atmospheric distance through layered mountains and forests, paint luminous shallow water and reflections, and introduce two small figures without allowing them to overpower the landscape. The emphasis will be on scale, depth and serenity.
Lesson 4
October 22, 2026
Frost
Our final lesson takes us to the Pacific coast. Against brilliant backlight, a solitary surfer becomes a strong, simple silhouette surrounded by sparkling water, mist and distant islands. We will explore negative painting, lost and found edges, silhouettes and atmospheric light, creating the feeling of a luminous morning at the ocean.
