Upgrade your skill level and widen your artistic horizon!

Lake Ontario is one of the mini-courses in the Canadian Landscape series. This time, we will explore the beauty and character of one of Canada’s Great Lakes—from a sunlit lighthouse beneath magnificent summer clouds to peaceful autumn reflections, a glowing sunrise, and a cruise boat moving across brilliant blue water.

Throughout four distinctive watercolour landscapes, you will practise painting expressive skies, different water conditions, reflections, atmospheric mist, architectural elements, rocks, trees, and moving vessels. You will also explore how colour, contrast, and edges can create light, distance, movement, and atmosphere.

You will study in a thoughtfully designed art studio space in Pakenham, Ontario, Canada. Every session includes step-by-step demonstrations, plenty of exercises, and space to experiment and grow. After each class, you will receive access to a video tutorial of the main project to continue learning at your own pace.

All support materials will be provided prior to the first day of the course. Please print them or ensure they are available on your device(s) for use during class.

Homework reviews and feedback will be given in person during class sessions to help you stay on track and improve.

The study process will be simple, stress free and understandable for every student. There will be a lots of exercise that will help you to become confident in loose style landscape painting.

The course is suitable for students who are comfortable with basic watercolour techniques and want to deepen their understanding of atmospheric effects and large-sky compositions.

This course is suitable for all levels of watercolour skill. Although some experience would help you to feel more comfortable.

Once you register and enroll for this course you will get access to the course content, art studio location and driving instructions.

Lesson 1

October 29, 2026

Lighthouse

In this lesson, we will paint a charming island lighthouse beneath a magnificent summer sky. We will practise creating luminous cumulus clouds, moving water, distant shoreline elements, trees, and small architectural details. Special attention will be given to balancing precise shapes with loose, expressive watercolour washes.

Lesson 2

November 5, 2026

Reflection

This peaceful autumn landscape will introduce the beauty of mirrored reflections and morning mist. We will explore how to simplify colourful trees, soften distant elements, and create reflections that feel natural without copying every shape exactly. The lesson will focus on symmetry, tonal balance, soft edges, and the quiet atmosphere of still water.

Lesson 3

November 12, 2026

Sunrise

In this lesson, we will capture the warmth and luminosity of sunrise over the lake. We will work with warm and cool colour contrasts, glowing skies, atmospheric mist, rocky shoreline textures, and broken reflections across the water. You will learn how to preserve light while building rich, dramatic shadows.

Lesson 4

November 19, 2026

Cruise Boat

Our final lesson combines architecture, water, and movement in a lively summer scene. We will simplify the complex structure of a cruise boat, establish convincing proportions, and use selective details without overworking the painting. Expressive brushstrokes, reflections, and the boat’s wake will help create the feeling of movement across the open lake, that always will be named Ontario.

  • Printer paper: a few pieces for printing references, and a few pages for practical exercises
  • Parchment paper: couple small pieces for practical exercises
  • Watercolour paper: a few small pieces (half of printer paper) and one piece (at least A4) of watercolour paper per lesson, the best is 100% cotton, 300g/m2, cold press or rough surface, recommended brands ARCHES, BAOHONG, FABRIANO
