The course takes place at Ottawa Valley Art Studio, based in Ontario, Canada. Located 5 minutes drive from Arnprior Canadian Tire and Pakenham Public Library, 15 min from Burnstown, 25-30 min from Kanata (Ottawa), Renfrew and Calabogie.

Art studio is fully equipped. Space is limited to 6 students. Minimum 3 students are required to run the course.

The 6 weeks in-studio “Northern Landscapes” course will allow you to continue study the watercolour technique Ala Prima. You will learn how to create clear and cloudless even and gradation washes to cover large spaces; how to make the process fast and easy.  You will learn how to create the  illusion of cold air, mist, fog, clouds and a rainy atmosphere. You will learn how to use your own photo references to create landscape paintings. Practise how to make a value illusion and semi- realistic painting.

By the end of the Intermediate course you will finish at least six large paintings plus practical exercises.

What this course gives you?

In this course you will learn to create outstanding landscape painting within 1 or 2 hours. The minimum colours in your palette will give you absolute freedom and will help you to train your vision. You will finish at least six large paintings plus practical exercises.

You will learn a few technical secrets how to create a special effects.

You will learn how to make a value illusion of clear and cold air in different time of a day. 

You will learn how important the quality and type of brushes and watercolour paper used for watercolour painting are. 

You will find out what you need to know about the colour chaos and how to use this knowledge.

You will get access to all references and templates immediate to your purchase. Please print them or make sure that they will be available at your device(s) for use during the class.

In this lesson you will learn how to create flawless cloudless clear sky.

Lesson 2

Frozen Air. Icy sky. Iceberg.

In this lesson you will experiment with different colour combinations to set up the mood, temperature and atmosphere in your paintings.

Lesson 3

November 27, 2024 @ 10 AM EST

Winter Farm. Cloudy sky.

In this lesson you will be experimenting with special effects using some ingredients from your kitchen pantry.

Lesson 4

December 4, 2024 @ 10 AM EST

Stormy sky. Island.

In this lesson you will study atmospheric perspective. You will learn alternative way how to create stormy sky.

Lesson 5

December 11, 2024 @ 10 AM EST

Misty Air. Foggy sky. Mossy hills.

In this lesson you will study to create illusion of different conditions of air; foggy, rainy and misty.

You will use the “wet-on-wet” technique to create an unfocused effect of the background.

Lesson 6

December 18, 2024 @ 10 AM EST

Salty Air. Sea Coast.

In the final lesson of this course you will create the beautiful ocean coast scenery using rules of atmospheric and tonal perspective.

Student’s work:

Materials that I am going to use during the course;

This list is only for your information, there is no need to get exactly what I am using:

Watercolour paper, per class:

  • A few sheets of Strathmore watercolour paper, 400 series, cellulose, 300gm2 - for explaining the brush work and type of washes;
  • one or two sheets of Strathmore watercolour paper, 500 series, 100% cotton, 300 gm2  - for the class practice;
  • And /or One or two sheets of Arches watercolour paper, cotton, cold press or rough, 300 gm2, size A4; for the class practice;

Watercolour brushes;
- Round # 10-12, # 6 and # 2; Escoda  or Dainayw;

- flat synthetic brush 11/2 or larger (Grumbacher, Santa Fe Art Supply, Connoisseur ) 

- Liner brush (Princeton, Artist’s Loft)

 

Watercolour paint:

IMPORTANT; Paint in tubes gives you the best results.

Northern Landscape Palette

Artistic tape;

Watercolour board (the board which you will tape your watercolour paper to) and plexiglass board (any plastic board that the wet paper will stick to); You can use any smooth surface board big enough to place your paper on it; glass, mirror, flat baking sheet. 

Watercolour palette with a large surface for mixing pigments and one 6 wells palette. Alternatively, you can use a white ceramic plate and a few white ramekins, or small jars. 

A Pencil 3H and 2B and Eraser;

Two large jars for water;

Paper towels;

Hair dryer.
