Breath In. Breath Out. Brush Stroke. Repeat.
Relaxation, meditation, and expressive watercolour painting
Sumi-e is more than a painting technique. It is a practice of slowing down, observing, breathing, and allowing the movement of the brush to become an extension of your energy.
In this meditative watercolour course, you will discover how simple, intentional brushstrokes can create paintings filled with movement, balance, and expression. Rather than trying to describe every detail, we will learn to capture the essence and spirit of the subject with only a few confident strokes.
You will explore traditional ideas of Sumi-e while working freely with ink and watercolour. Through breathing exercises, brush practice, and a series of beautiful natural subjects, you will gradually develop confidence in the spontaneous “flying brush” style.
No previous painting experience is required. This course is designed for all ages and all skill levels.
Zoom will be used to host live interactive classes. After the class you will get a private access to Zoom class recordings. The online study process will be simple, stress free and understandable for every student. There will be many exercises that will help you to become confident in the “flying” brush style.

Course Content
The Art of Sumi-e
Unlike painting traditions that focus on creating a detailed and realistic representation of the world, Sumi-e searches for something different.
The artist observes, simplifies, and chooses only what is essential.
A branch does not need every twig.
A flower does not need every petal.
A landscape does not need every tree.
A few carefully placed strokes can suggest an entire world.
Sumi-e teaches us to appreciate simplicity, movement, empty space, and the beauty of imperfection. Each brushstroke becomes a record of a particular moment — the pressure of the hand, the amount of water and pigment in the brush, the speed of movement, and even the rhythm of our breathing.
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is presence.

The schedule:
Six Meditative Lessons
Our journey begins with the Four Elements — Earth, Water, Air, and Fire, where we explore breath, movement, energy, and the fundamental language of the brush.
From there, we move into the natural world through Bamboo, Plum Blossoms, Chrysanthemum, Poppies & Sunflowers, and Iris.
Each lesson introduces new brush movements and gives you an opportunity to practice rhythm, control, spontaneity, and expression.
Little by little, you will learn when to guide the brush — and when to simply allow it to fly.

ZOOM lesson 2
November 10, 2026
7 – 9 PM EST

Discover the strength and elegance of bamboo through confident, flowing brushwork. You will learn how changes in pressure, direction, speed, and moisture can create expressive stems and leaves. Bamboo is a wonderful practice in rhythm, balance, simplicity, and the beauty of a single intentional stroke.
ZOOM lesson 3
November 17, 2026
7 – 9 PM EST Montreal

Explore the delicate beauty of flowering plum branches, a traditional and beloved subject in Sumi-e painting. You will practice expressive branches, graceful blossoms, and subtle variations of colour and ink while learning how negative space and asymmetrical composition bring a painting to life.
ZOOM lesson 4
November 24, 2026
7 – 9 PM EST Montreal

Slow down and discover the quiet elegance of the chrysanthemum. You will learn how a sequence of simple, rhythmic brushstrokes can gradually build a complex flower. ZOOM lesson 5
December 1, 2026
7 – 9 PM EST Montreal

Bring colour and freedom into your Sumi-e practice with airy poppies and radiant sunflowers. You will explore expressive washes, spontaneous petals, delicate stems, and energetic centres while learning how to combine colour with traditional ink-inspired brushwork. The emphasis is on movement, freshness, and joyful imperfection..
ZOOM lesson 6
December 8, 2026
7 – 9 PM EST Montreal

Complete the course with the graceful and powerful form of the iris. You will practice long, confident strokes for leaves and stems and softer, flowing movements for the flowers.
