The course takes place at Ottawa Valley Art Studio, based in Ontario, Canada. Located 5 minutes drive from Arnprior Canadian Tire and Pakenham Public Library, 15 min from Burnstown, 25-30 min from Kanata (Ottawa), Renfrew and Calabogie.

Art studio is fully equipped. Space is limited to 6 students. Minimum 3 students are required to run the course.

The 12 week in-studio “My Flowers” course contains two levels: Beginners and Intermediate.

The first 6 weeks course for Beginners covers basic watercolour techniques: even and gradated washes, multilayered and infusion wash, negative style of painting and a few different ways to create backgrounds. You will learn step by step how to work with the intriguing and unpredictable media of watercolour. You will progress from the simplest washes through multilayered washes. This will allow you to be more confident with your brushes. Along with understanding the differences in the watercolour painting styles; you will learn the basic rules of composition and rhythms in your paintings.

By the end of the Beginner course you will have at least 4 finished paintings along with many exercises.

During the second 6 weeks course for Intermediate you will learn a few technical secrets and how to use masking liquid and why. You will practise how to make a value illusion and absolutely realistic painting. You will experiment how to join or separate the background and flowers.
You will get comfortable with the colour chaos and how to use it to create a beautiful background. In this course you will learn to create multilayered spaces using negative wash and multi-layered wash techniques. You will learn how to use your own photo references to create very detailed paintings.

By the end of the Intermediate course you will finish at least five large paintings plus practical exercises.

What is in the course

Beginner level: Lesson 1 to 6

Lesson 1

Simple wash

This class is all about practice and understanding what the simple washes are and how you can create the an even “brushstroke-less” wash.

Lesson 2

Advanced wash

This class is about how to use the colour theory knowledge to create beautiful multicoloured washes.

Lesson 3

Tulip

In this class you are going to paint a simple tulip to practise different types of washes that you were studying before.

Lesson 4

Garden Rose

In this lesson you will discover alternative ways to create your own template using ANY type of photos from your garden. You will practise all types of washes that you were studying in the previous classes and try a few new ones. You will practise the pigment lifting and adding details with calligraphy brush.

Lesson 5

Daffodils

In this class you will study the anatomy of daffodils, do a few pencil sketches and then you learn how to create your own composition using sketches of only one flower. You will learn how to paint white petals on white background and you will learn how to create an icy blue background.

Lesson 6

Morning Glory

This class is all about how to create the effect of internal glow from Morning Glory flowers. You will practise all types of infusion washes to be able to accomplish your painting fast by working in one layer, also called Ala Prima. You will have a few options on how to finish the background.

Intermediate level: Lesson 7 to 12

Lesson 7

Types of watercolour painting. Special effects.

In the first lesson you will play with different conditions of paper and watercolour paint to discover four combinations of their mixes.

You will experimenting with special effects using some ingredients from your kitchen pantry. You will learn how to apply masking liquid.

Lesson 8

Daisy

In this class you will be experimenting with masking liquid effects.

The masking liquid is a very helpful “gadget” that you can use to make your painting process easier and faster.

Lesson 9

Negative space. Multilayered wash. Wild Rose.

In this lesson you will study the negative space and you will practice multilayered washes.

You will experiment with different colour combinations to set up the mood, temperature and atmosphere in your paintings.

Lesson 10

Alternative wash. Orchid

In this lesson you will have fun by blowing and spraying coloured puddles to create background splash effects.

Lesson 11

Flower portrait. Pansy.

In this lesson you will paint a portrait of a Pansy. You will work in Ala Prima to create the most realistic look of the petals.

You will use the “wet-on-wet” technique to create an unfocused effect of the background.

Lesson 12

Flower portrait. Rose.

In the final lesson of this course you will create the portrait of a gorgeous rose Violet’s Pride from the Downton Abbey Collection.
