ORIENTAL POPPIES

During this tutorial you will learn how to paint the beautiful composition of Oriental Poppies. The painting process will cover multi-layering and Ala Prima techniques such as, infusion washes, lifting, “wet on dry” and “dry on damp” techniques.


This tutorial suites to all ages and all skills levels. A pencil sketch template is provided.

MATERIALS that you will need for this workshop:

  • watercolour paper, 100% cotton is preferable;
  • printer paper, pencil and eraser;
  • black marker Sharpie 
  • watercolour brushes, one mop brush (round), flat brush and detailed brush
  • watercolour paint:
  • - Yellow (Cadmium Yellow)
  • - Orange  (Orange Transporante)
  • - Bright Red (Pyrol Scarlet, Permanent Red)
  • - Deep Red (Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Carmine, Quinacridone Red)
  • - Magenta
  • - Dark Blue ( Delph Blue)
  • - Black Blue (Indigo)
  • - Dark Grey (Neutral Tint or Paynes' Grey)
  • - Light Green (Green Gold)
  • - Dark Green (Undersea Green, Green Apatite, Dusk Yellow)
  • White gouache or Dr.Ph.Martin's Bleed Proof White 
  • watercolour board (the board you will tape your paper to)
  • artistic tape
  • watercolour palette or big white porcelain plate
  • two large jars for water
  • paper towel
  • hair dryer
