In this tutorial you will be practising the Ala Prima technique and you will be experimenting with infusing washes. In preparation for the big painting you will do two practical exercises covering how to paint winter sky and how to create the illusion of fluffiness snow covered trees.

Materials that I am going to use during the workshop:

This list is only for your information, there is no need to get exactly what I am using:

Watercolour paper, Arches watercolour paper, cotton, rough, 300 gm2 - 2-3 sheets

Watercolour brushes;
- Round # 10-12 Paul Rubens and # 2 Escoda 

- Flat synthetic brush 3/4 and 1 1/2 or larger Escoda

Calligraphy brush, 5 mm

 

Plexiglass board (any plastic board that the wet paper will stick to); You can use any smooth surface board big enough to place your paper on it; glass, mirror, flat baking sheet.

 

Watercolour palette with a large surface for mixing pigments. Alternatively, you can use a white ceramic plate. 

A Pencil  2B and Eraser (kneadable);

Two large jars for water;

Paper towels;

Sea sponge (optional);

Sponge (a small pieces approximately 2x2 cm);

Hair dryer

Watercolour paints:

You will need any combination of blue colours:

  • Light blue - Cerulean Blue or Lavender 
  • Blue - Royal Blue
  • Ultramarine
  • Cobalt
  • Dark Blue - Delft Blue
  • Black Blue - Indigo

and the following colours:

  • Dark Grey - Paynes Grey or Neutral Tint
  • Any light yellow - Lemon Yellow
  • Any pinkish colour - Quinacridone Rose

White Gouache (optional)

And/or

COPIC White Opaque

White Gelly Roll pen, Sakura 0,8
